Postcards of Places to Cry
A series of relief prints sized 6”x4” depicting places to cry, sob, or otherwise have an emotional breakdown.
A frequent motif throughout the series are the depiction of novelty roadside attractions, which are emblematic of the decline of USA empire and the dying of the American Dream, while also being unique landmarks that took immense communal effort to construct for the purpose of memorial or as a way to draw tourists in. Being depicted in small format relief prints harkens back to historical Japanese Ukiyo-E prints, such as the Great Wave off Kanagawa, that were frequently used to tempt Dutch traders to visit Japan.
Postcards of Places to Cry heightens the personal to the general, inviting viewers/recipients to view common spaces the way we do more typical landmarks by treating the everyday places and crises we suffer in them as deserving of notoriety and memorialization.
